Shoreline Amphitheatre History
The city of Mountain View , with the help of Bill Graham – the local promoter, built the Shoreline Amphitheatre as part of the Shoreline Park project. The work commenced in the year 1985 and the amphitheater opened in 1986.
The amphitheater was designed to resemble the “steal your face” image of The Grateful Dead. With a three feet pitch for each row of fixed seating, there is more than enough legroom and good space for dancing. Shoreline Amphitheater tickets are sold out as soon as they become available, especially when famous bands perform at the venue.
The Grateful Dead was scheduled to be the opening act for the Shoreline Amphitheater when it opened in 1986, but unfortunately they had to cancel because of Jerry Garcia's coma. But they later returned in 1987 and 1990 to perform there. These shows were recorded and released later as “View from the Vault, Volume III,” a live album.
During its opening year at a Steve Winwood concert, a fan flicked a cigarette lighter and what happened next was the most unexpected. The flame ignited the methane that had been leaking from underground. Many other small fires were reported later that season and methane testing studies were commissioned to find out where the methane emanates from. An improved design for monitoring and extracting methane was put in place. Later, the lawn was removed to install equipment for methane removal and a gas barrier. After the equipment installation, the lawn was put back in place.
Famous Performances at the Shoreline Amphitheater
Shoreline Amphitheatre has been the venue for many unforgettable performances by some of the greatest artists of our times.
“An Evening of Yes Music Plus,” the live album of Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (ABWH), was recorded during their performance at the venue on September 9, 1989. Another live album was by the Dave Matthews Band. They performed and recorded their show on 6 July, 1997 and released it as an album called “Live Trax Vol. 17.”
The Shoreline Amphitheater is also a favorite venue for music festivals such as The Mayhem Festival, The Vans Warped Tour, The Area:One and Area2 Festival, H.O.R.D.E Tour, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest, Projekt Revolution and Lilith Fair.
